Vlasta Zak’s latest work is characterised by transition from the big party cycle and a phenomenon of the weekend entertainment into the dreamy world full of magic which exists in parallel with that one we encounter.

She produces creatures - soft sculptures made out of fabric - that live their spiritual lives in empty spaces based on completely different principles than those of human beings.

When creating her soft sculptures and paintings, she uses UV light effects in combination with black and white colours. Technically speaking, Vlasta creates a 3D effect with pieces of fabric, in the same way the painter uses his brush strokes to evoke plasticity. This unexpected meshing of materials results in work that is raw, detailed and fractured.

Vlasta presents new collaborative work as a result of her Artist-in-Residence program at Red Gallery. Instead of sculptures in a frozen frame her new piece is taking action in a hallucinatory performance event musically supported by Stephunk T and set design by Ruta Pu from the Terrible Twins.

Vlasta Zak from Roznava, Slovakia lives and works in Bratislava. She is currently PhD student at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Vlasta is taking part in our Artist in Residence program in cooperation with K.A.I.R. Kosice during the summer months of July and August.

Vlasta’s work has appeared in group shows from Prague to Budapest, in galleries including the National Gallery in Prague, Kunstverein Heilbronn, Germany and Jan Koniarek Gallery in Trnava, Slovakia.

She was twice finalist of the renowned CEZ 333 Prize, awarded by the National Gallery in Prague, and has also been selected for the final fashion show by Schwarzkopf Fashion Talent 2012. Her work has been shown as a part of the Egoart Prize exhibition in Bratislava in 2007.
